As you might have noticed, electric
bills are on the rise. Why? Because fuel rates (natural gas prices)
are higher. Even though our service rates at United are the same as
always, we are impacted by the increase in fuel cost. We buy our power
from Brazos Electric Cooperative. Like many power generators in Texas
and across the United States, Brazos uses natural gas to run its
electric-generating turbines. So what’s happened? Natural gas prices
have gone sky high. Since Brazos is paying more, they pass the charge
onto us, and that increase in natural gas prices is passed on to all of
us as consumers. If it’s any comfort, as a cooperative, we’re forbidden
by law to make a penny on “pass-on” charges. All you’re paying is the
rise in natural gas costs. Unfortunately, while this increase is not
likely to go higher, it may not go down anytime soon.
The good news is, there are things
we both can do. We’ve posted energy tips on our Web site and each
United office has energy savings manuals available for you to learn how
to save more on your electric bill. We’ll even send an energy-cost
expert to your home for a free analysis. On your side, you can adjust
your thermostat, fix leaky ducts, install insulation and much more.
What else can members do? Plenty!
