Safe City is geared toward younger audiences and teaches electrical safety through a working miniature model city.
Each year, employees from United Cooperative Services visit dozens of elementary schools to educate thousands of young people about how to be safe around electricity. The program is presented mostly to fourth graders and coincides with the topics covered in their science curriculum. Students learn how to be safe around electricity and the science behind how electricity is delivered to their homes.
United has been delivering electricity to its members since 1938 and takes safety education seriously. The cooperative marketing and safety staff spends countless hours speaking to local civic groups, community groups and schools. Coordinating safety displays and education programs, which impacts thousands of school children with an important safety message.
The Safe City model depicts a typical neighborhood scene and demonstrates electrical contact hazards including overhead and underground electrical service.
The Safe City model is powered by a transformer which produces a 10,000 volt, 23 miliamp current, producing dramatic arcs when contacts are made.
