Safe City is geared toward younger audiences and
teaches electrical safety through a working miniature model city.
Each year, employees from United Cooperative
Services visit dozens of elementary schools to educate thousands of
young people about how to be safe around electricity. The program is
presented mostly to fourth graders and coincides with the topics covered
in their science curriculum. Students learn how to be safe around
electricity and the science behind how electricity is delivered to their
homes.
United has been delivering electricity to its
members since 1938 and takes safety education seriously. The
cooperative marketing and safety staff spends countless hours speaking
to local civic groups, community groups and schools. Coordinating
safety displays and education programs, which impacts thousands of
school children with an important safety message.
The Safe City model depicts a typical neighborhood
scene and demonstrates electrical contact hazards including overhead and
underground electrical service.
The Safe City model is powered by a transformer
which produces a 10,000 volt, 23 miliamp current, producing dramatic
arcs when contacts are made. |
